Grace M. Pietsch
Grace spends much of her time in the warmer months at the nursery compound between North and Central greenhouses. She maintains the irrigation in the bowhouses and outside experimental plots. She has reorganized and now maintains the nursery building where pots, media, equipment, potting supplies and other supplies are stored. The nursery building contains a large walk-in cooler that she monitors and delegates space for. Grace has her pesticide certification and applies all pesticides as needed in the compound and greenhouse. She is also in charge of ordering supplies, scheduling space, fertilizing plants, and general maintenance of the space. Grace conducts research as required on site and off. She has worked with Dr. Fulcher on the intelligent sprayer project, irrigation experiments, and Hydrangea projects. For Dr. Klingeman she has traveled locally and out of town to collect insect traps and plant material. Grace works with graduate students as needed for their projects, in the nursery compound, greenhouse and lab.
During the colder parts of the year Grace spends some of her time working in the lab with various beetle and fungal organisms. She has learned quite a bit about culturing fungi, extracting DNA, running PCR, and interpreting results for each of these processes. She also spends time writing and editing manuscripts as needed. Grace worked with the TNLA Master Nurseryman program developing and editing content for Dr. Fulcher.
Grace works with both Dr. Bill Klingeman and Dr. Amy Fulcher to conduct research for the Nursery Industry.
Grace presents updates of the research she is working on at annual field days each year. She also helps with research presented by others.
