Specialization: Extension Specialist - Turfgrass Science and Management

Overview

As a Turfgrass Extension Specialist at the University of Tennessee, I work closely with UT Extension personnel—including Specialists and Agents—to deliver science-based information and practical recommendations to turfgrass stakeholders across the state. My Extension program is focused on supporting the development and management of turfgrass systems that are not only attractive and functional, but also economically viable, environmentally responsible, and socially beneficial.

Key areas of emphasis include turfgrass selection, water conservation and management, and the efficient and responsible application of inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. I achieve these goals through local, regional, and statewide programming efforts—both independently and in collaboration with key partners within and beyond the university system, including industry professionals, municipal managers, and research collaborators.

To support and inform my outreach, I maintain an applied research program that aligns closely with stakeholder needs. Current research efforts focus primarily on turfgrass variety and cultivar evaluation, the use of soil surfactants, irrigation strategies, and fertilizer input management. My work aims to improve the efficiency and performance of turfgrass systems while minimizing off-target impacts and reducing the risk of non-point source pollution.

Together, my extension and research programs are designed to promote sustainable turfgrass management practices that balance performance with conservation—supporting healthy green spaces across Tennessee in residential, commercial, recreational, and sports settings.
