Overview

Dr. Brian Herrin is an associate professor at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. He graduated from Oklahoma State University for both his DVM and PhD. After completing his PhD, Dr. Herrin spent eight years at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. There, he built his research program on parasites of veterinary and medical importance, while running an AAVLD-accredited parasitology diagnostic lab and teaching veterinary parasitology throughout the curriculum. Although his research focus is mainly on ectoparasites, Dr. Herrin enjoys working with all parasites of veterinary importance through the diagnostic service, teaching, and outreach opportunities.

Research Focus

The surveillance of vector-borne and emerging parasitic infections and the control of ticks and fleas on companion animals.

Clinical Focus

As director of the parasitology section for the diagnostic laboratory at UTCVM, Dr. Herrin oversees testing and routinely consults with referring vets.

Teaching Focus

Veterinary parasitology in the first-year; clinical parasitology rotation to fourth-year ; training undergraduate/DVM students in parasite research.

Outreach Focus

Dr. Herrin's outreach focus is in providing CE to practicing veterinarians on evidence-based parasite control in practice.
