James Mark Young

IT Specialist III | Information Technology Services

Specialization: IT Coordinator, UT AgResearch

Overview

I began my career at the University of Tennessee in the mid-1990's working as a "Research Associate" in Forestry and using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on the Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center in Oak Ridge, TN. Work duties involved forest management, forest inventory and analysis, timber sale administration, and developing forest management plans. I also performed database management activities and developed a comprehensive geographic information system for the Center. In 2007, I transferred to the UTIA Campus in Knoxville where I served as "GIS Coordinator" for UT AgResearch, helping to implement and provide training on different aspects of geographic information system technology ranging from data collection, management and implementation, and database design, to software/hardware training, and spatial analysis. During this time we successfully expanded a GIS presence on many of the AgResearch and Education Centers and developed a comprehensive set of base data layers for each of the Centers. In 2013, I joined the UTIA Information Technology Services unit as IT Coordinator for UT AgResearch, working primarily with the AgResearch and Education Centers, and more recently also helping the Administrative office with a variety of IT related needs. My work has included such activities as developing and maintaining information management systems, networking assistance, GIS support and development, data management support, and a range of other services. Most recently, I've added support/maintenance of the AgResearch Intranet system, and AgResearch-related website development/maintenance to the services I provide.
