Overview

I am interested in amphibian disease ecology and conservation. I often focus on interactions between hosts, pathogens, and microbiomes. I am currently studying the spread of diseases in the amphibian pet trade. Specifically, I am interested in how husbandry conditions can impact microbiome health (including diversity, structure, and function), and how microbiome health then influences host health and the host's ability to respond to pathogens. I hope to identify best practices to improve amphibian health and reduce pathogen transmission within the pet trade, thereby reducing the risk of pathogen spillover to wild populations and protecting vital amphibian biodiversity.

Research Focus

Amphibian Disease Ecology, Microbial Ecology, Herpetology

Research Questions
  • How do husbandry conditions in the pet amphibian trade impact host-microbiome-pathogen interactions?
  • How do shipping conditions within the pet amphibian trade impact disease transmission?
  • How does host density in a captive setting impact disease burden and transmission in the amphibian pet trade?
  • How do physiological host health, pathogen response, and microbiome composition interact in amphibians?
