Reza Seddighi, DVM, MS, DVSc/PhD, Diplomate American College of V

Overview

Dr. Seddighi earned his DVM from Shiraz University, a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois, and a DVSc from Shiraz University. Dr. Seddighi is a specialist and expert on anesthesia and pain management of animals. Dr. Seddighi is also certified in veterinary medical acupuncture and advanced cardiac life support. His special interests are in the area of anesthesia and analgesia, with a clinical focus on anesthesia, pain management, and acupuncture in companion and farm animals.
Dr. Seddighi conducts extensive research in the areas of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetics and analgesics. He is involved in the teaching of all aspects of anesthesia and pain management of animals including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, alpacas, swine, dogs, cats, and exotic species. Dr. Seddighi enjoys providing seminars on anesthesia in animals with co-existing diseases, geriatric anesthesia and analgesia, management of Anesthetic complications, and the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of anesthetic and analgesic drugs.

Research Focus

Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics (MAC-Sparing) of analgesics/anesthetics; Partial and Total Intravenous Anesthesia (PIVA & TIVA).

Clinical Focus

Practicing balanced Anesthesia; Medical Acupuncture; Management of acute and chronic pain

Clinical training in sedation and anesthesia of companion animals, food animals and horses. Direct responsibility for diagnosis, care and treatment of clinical patients.

Clinical training and additional medical responsibilities with complex anesthesia patients. Intended for students who may pursue post-graduate training in anesthesia.

VMP 890 - Pain Management Elective
1 credit hour(s)

Elective explores clinical pain and pain management with emphasis on typical veterinary clinical problems. Fundamentals of nociception and comparative algology will underlie the focus on clinical relief of pain. Nociceptive pain, procedural pain, postoperative pain, maladaptive pain, chronic pain, cancer pain, and related syndromes will be addressed. Case scenarios and practical examples will serve to reinforce the principles of pain management, including preemptive analgesia, balanced analgesia, and recognition of varying patient needs. Includes discussion of typical and atypical uses of the principle classes of analgesics, including NSAIDs, opioids, and local anesthetics, as well as adjunctive medications and non-drug methods for pain relief.
