Explores the development of life science and agricultural knowledge and the competing schools of thought on how to develop an educational system in a democratic society. Early debates centered on agriculture as a science, an art, or simply a mass of empiricism. Major thinkers of agriculture and education believed in the power of educating the masses and the social power of knowledge. Current and historical models of agricultural leadership, education, and communications will be interpreted through cultural and historically significant works, figures, and schools of thought. Enables students to develop communication skills in face-to-face environments. Students will learn and apply verbal and nonverbal communication strategies relevant to the delivery of demonstrative, informative, persuasive, and group presentations. Recruitment, selection, training, retention and supervision of volunteers. Will explore the praxis between volunteer leadership theories and the practical application of those behaviors to effectively develop and lead a volunteer program in the contexts of agricultural education, Extension and community nonprofits.

ALEC 539 - Basic Applied Data Analysis in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications

Select (a) appropriate statistical techniques to use in analyzing ALEC quantitative research data, and (b) appropriate coding methods for analyzing ALEC qualitative data. Use appropriate software to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data. Report results in narrative and appropriate table, graphic, or visual forms for inclusion in scholarly writing and impact communications.
