UT Extension county director supports producers and inspires the next generation of agricultural leaders

Where are you from, and how did your career lead you to UTIA?

I am from the rural East Tennessee community of Mooresburg. I have always enjoyed being in the great outdoors and working with great people.

What is your role within UT Extension, and what do you do on a typical day?

I am an Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Resource Development Extension Agent and the UT Extension Grundy County Director. Typically, I work hard to support producers and mentor my coworkers so that they can better themselves in the important things they do. I also answer lots of fish pond questions across the great state of Tennessee!

Why did you choose the field of agriculture and natural resources?

I was born and raised on a small farm property near Cherokee Lake. From a young age, my father encouraged me to take care of the land and partake in the great outdoors. I knew at a young age that I wanted to work in a natural resources-related field. I am very grateful for the great mentors I had at the University of Tennessee who guided me in a positive direction.

What is the most fulfilling aspect of the work you do?

Assisting folks of all ages, who we work with daily in making better decisions to help them save or earn more, become more efficient, and live healthier and more productive lives.

What has been your proudest moment while working at UTIA?

Being able to obtain my master’s degree while working. Also, helping to lead the team that designed and implemented a new mentoring program for UT Extension employees.

What is your favorite Real. Life. Solution. that you have provided to Tennesseans and beyond through your work?

Live right, work hard, and if you are passionate about it, don’t give up!

What is one of your favorite experiences you have had while working at the Grundy County Extension office?

Seeing our staff members have impactful educational programs and growing together as a team.

What is a project you are currently working on that you are excited about?

Annual Farm Day for our youth in Grundy County. It is hard work preparing but well worth the time and effort and very rewarding.

What do you like to do outside of work and/or what is a fun fact about yourself that your colleagues may not know?

I enjoy working with my church family, traveling the countryside with my wonderful wife, hanging out with my family and close friends, and of course fishing every opportunity that I can!
