Joe Smith, DVM, MPS, PhD, MPS, DACVIM, DACVCP, cVMA

Assistant Professor | Large Animal

Specialization: Farm Animal Medicine and Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology

Overview

Dr. Joe Smith received his DVM from the Ohio State University in 2009. Afterwards he practiced in a mixed animal clinic based out of Northwest Pennsylvania. In practice he completed a master’s degree from Penn State University. In 2015 he completed a Large Animal Internal Medicine Residency at UC Davis (Davis, CA). He then served as a faculty clinician at Iowa State University (Ames, IA) from 2015-2020 while completing a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and a Clinical Pharmacology residency (co-supported by the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatoon, SK, Canada). Dr. Smith has board certifications from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology. Clinically he enjoys all aspects of farm animal medicine and surgery but has a clinical interest in the management of small ruminant medical conditions and urogenital surgery. He enjoys presenting continuing education on veterinary pharmacology, especially small ruminants. His primary research interests are small ruminant pharmacology, clinical problem-solving, and point-of-care for food animals. Dr. Smith enjoys coaching wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kayaking, and spending time outdoors in his free moments.

Research Focus

Clinical pharmacology (all species) with a focus on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in large animals. Collaborations for clinical restrospective investigations are also a focus.

Clinical Focus

Clinical focus encompasses all aspects of ruminant medicine, patient care, diagnostics, and training of veterinary students, interns, and residents.

Teaching Focus
