Lew Strickland, DVM, MS, DACT

Overview

I was raised on a family dairy farm and then remained in the dairy business for 25 years. I believe that my agricultural background helps me in making connections with producers in that I have been exactly where they are and understand the issues they are facing. 

I attended Auburn University and obtained my B.S. in animal science, then my DVM in 1999. I was in a large animal private practice in Cleveland TN, then in a dairy practice in central Pennsylvania before returning to Auburn to earn my M.S. and board certification in theriogenology. I then served as interim Extension veterinarian for the Alabama Extension system. 

I started here at the animal science department in 2013 as the Extension veterinarian. My goals in this position are to provide education and information for Tennessee stakeholders to improve the health of their animals. I reach this goal through relationships with county Extension agents, farm visits, in-person Master program meetings, virtual web sessions, phone calls, emails, popular press articles, and Extension publications. I also have a website (askdrlew.tennessee.edu) where owners can send in questions concerning the health and welfare of their animals. I then give advice on care that can be carried out by the owner, or I connect them with a local veterinarian for diagnostics and care by that veterinarian. 

Outreach Focus

As Extension veterinarian, my focus is providing education and information to Tennessee stakeholders, Extension agents, and agricultural/veterinary students.
