Inspired undergraduate pursues an education in animal science in the Herbert College of Agriculture

Where are you from, and why did you decide to attend the UT Herbert College of Agriculture?

I am from Taft, Tennessee, a small town located in southern middle Tennessee. Growing up heavily involved in 4-H and FFA, visits to the Herbert College of Agriculture were not uncommon. Once it became time to apply for college, UT was at the top of my list. After doing one final tour I knew that I could make Herbert my home.

What is your major and why?

I am majoring in animal science with a concentration in bioscience. Growing up on a cow-calf operation, I was immersed in all things agriculture and fell in love with livestock evaluation and 4-H livestock skillathon, so it was a no brainer when it came time to decide my major.

What has been your favorite class and/or who is your favorite professor?

Throughout my time at the University of Tennessee, I have taken many interesting classes, but I think I enjoyed Food Science 150: History and culture of food with Dr. David Golden the most.

What has been your favorite experience at Herbert so far?

Having the privilege to serve as a Herbert College of Agriculture ambassador as well as take on a leadership position within that organization has been my favorite experience as a Herbert student. The connections made, whether it is through faculty, current students or prospective students, and being able to represent a college I love all across the Southeast has been unmatched.

How has your experience in the Herbert College of Agriculture prepared you to enter the field?

Being able to participate in undergraduate research has prepared me for my future career. Being the land-grant university in Tennessee, opportunities for students not only in the Herbert College of Agriculture, but across the entire university to assist in research are plentiful.

What would you say to a prospective Herbert student?

Join the Herbert Living and Learning Community! The friendships and memories made during my time in the LLC will last a lifetime, and truly made my freshman year experience one I will never forget.

What do you like to do outside of school and/or what is a fun fact about yourself that your fellow students and professors may not know?

Most everyone knows my older sister, Abigayle, and I showed cattle, but before that, we competitively figure skated!
