Charles William Lothamer, DVM, DAVDC

Overview

Dr. Lothamer graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. After graduation, he practiced in a small animal clinic in the town of Brevard, North Carolina for six years before deciding that veterinary dentistry was his calling and returned to academia to pursue specialized training in dentistry and oral surgery. From 2012 through 2015 he completed a residency program in dentistry and oral surgery at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Lothamer has worked as an assistant professor of dentistry and oral surgery at Colorado State University and the University of Minnesota before taking advantage of the opportunity to return to his Alma mater, the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2019. Dr. Lothamer's interests are in educating veterinary students and general practitioners so that they are comfortable with dentistry and oral surgery. Dr. Lothamer's research interests are rooted in helping clinicians to make informed decisions regarding treatment and include jaw fracture management and endodontic therapies.

VMC 865 - Small Animal Dentistry

Clinical training in small animal dentistry, including dental prophylaxis, and advanced surgical and dental therapeutics in small animal and zoological species.

Grading Restriction(s): Honors or Satisfactory/No Credit grading only.
Repeatability: May be repeated. Maximum 4 hours.
Registration Restriction(s): Veterinary Medicine Students only.

VMP 838 - Dentistry
0.5 credit hour(s)

Dental anatomy, formulas, and development of basic diagnostic and treatment plans, as well as the pathophysiology, clinical description, and basic treatment modalities of common dental disorders of small animals. Course will briefly cover the care and use of instruments and equipment found in a modern dental practice.

Registration Restriction(s): Veterinary Medicine Students only.

VMP 870 - Special Studies in Veterinary Medicine
1 - 8 credit hours

Specially-designed studies for students in novel special-interest topics and/or for students participating in self-directed learning environments. Topics are unique and not associated with standard core rotations or elective topics within the veterinary or MPH curriculum.

Grading Restriction: Satisfactory/No Credit grading only.
Repeatability: May be repeated. Maximum 16 hours.
Registration Restriction(s): Veterinary Medicine Students only. Upon approval of the associate dean.
